Communication Champion Training

**Level 1 - Introduction** Including - The Role of the Communication Champion, an introduction to Wellcomm and Nursery Talk and TASS

Outline

Group settings need to nominate a Communication Champion - ideally a graduate/highly qualified staff member who can disseminate learning effectively.
This course is the first step of the Giving Voice Accreditation Award pathway and is designed to equip the setting’s Communication Champion with the knowledge and skills to create and sustain a supportive, developmentally appropriate, language-rich Early Years environment.

The course is made up of 2 x 2.5 hour sessions (5 hours in total):
Part 1: The Role of the Communication Champion and Nursery Talk
Part 2: Introduction to WellComm and the Trafford Assessment of Speech Sounds

This goes hand in hand with the launch of our Communication Champions scheme - those who attend this training will receive a Wellcomm pack on loan worth £330! (one pack per setting)

Description

Part 1 of the course introduces the Communication Champion to the pathway and their role. Communication Champions will develop skills in embedding good practice around speech, language and communication support for young children by learning how to identifying training needs within their team and embed information from training effectively within the setting. Nursery Talk provides a comprehensive and insightful look at how speech, language and communication skills typically develop from birth to five years and what to look out for in children whose communication skills may not be developing as expected for their age. A range of practical strategies and activities for each stage of communication development are discussed, with a particular focus on the crucial role adult-child interaction.

Part 2 involves receipt of a WellComm Screening language and communication Toolkit for use within the setting. The session is focused on supporting Communication Champions to feel confident in administering and interpreting results from screening of young children. As well as a detailed look at the screening components of the WellComm, we also look at the Intervention section – the ‘Big Book of Ideas’ - and how this can be applied within the setting, particularly to support children who are showing delays in their speech, language and/or communication development. How to use and interpret The Trafford Assessment of Speech Sounds (TASS) is also covered. This enables Communication Champions to develop their knowledge of typical speech sound development, how to screen a child’s speech skills and to identify if further, specialist support is required.

It will be the role of the Communication Champion to co-ordinate the Giving Voice Recognition Award in their setting, oversee and quality assure the use of the WellComm pack and ensure that delegates attending any of the training courses within the speech and language pathway disseminates the content to the team.
