Introduction to Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC)/Social Communication

** Introductory Level for SENCOs and Early Years Practitioners**

Outline

The aim of this course is to develop a basic understanding of social communication needs and autism spectrum condition (ASC) and how to support young children and their families.

This training course has been revised and developed by:
Louise Knox, Educational Psychologist
Jackie Tarpey, SEN consultant - Autism and Social Communication
Mali Rashidi, Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

Description

The course will cover the following areas through a range of activities including information giving, case studies and group discussions:
  • How to identify children who present with social communication needs and ASC
  • What to do if you have concerns about a child’s social communication skills
  • Exploring your own experiences of children with social communication needs within your setting
  • Sharing good practice and discussing ways to support children with social communication needs/ASC and their families

Session 1 Wednesday 16 January 2019
Focus:
  • The diagnostic process for ASC and the role of early years practitioners in identifying needs linked to Trafford’s Graduated Response Social v medical model of ASC
  • Individual difference (including positive role models and discussion about girls)
  • Supporting families

Session 2 Wednesday 30 January 2019
Focus:
  • Personalising support plans linked to communication and interaction (using Hanen ideas)

Session 3 Wednesday 6 February 2019
Focus:
  • Personalised support plans linked to sensory needs, engagement and participation (using STAR)
  • Case study
  • Overview of how this all sits within Assess, Plan, Do, Review and Diagnostic Pathway

  • Reflecting on how to embed this training in your setting using the Assess Plan Do Review (APDR) framework and develop your own professional practice.

Outcomes

By the end of this session learners will understand/have an awareness of:
  • What is meant by the terms social communication needs and ASC, including differences between the ‘medical’ and ‘social’ model of ASC
  • The strengths and challenges faced by young children with social communication needs and ASC, with respect to ‘individual difference’
  • How to develop personalised plans of support, focussing specifically on communication and interaction, sensory needs, and participation and engagement in an early years setting
  • How to involve and engage with families in a positive way when concerned about a child’s social communication development
  • The diagnostic process for ASC and the role of early years practitioners in identifying needs linked to Trafford’s Graduated Response
