Phonics - Phase 2 Letters and Sounds

**Intermediate Level** Please note: This course is only appropriate for practitioners who have attended training in Phase 1 Letters and Sounds & are working with children who are secure in Phase 1.

Outline

To familiarise practitioners with the current approach to teaching phonics.
To provide practitioners with the confidence to use Phase 2 of the Letters and Sounds systematic phonics programme to support children’s early literacy skills. 2.

Description

Please note: This course is only appropriate for practitioners who have attended the Phase 1 training and are working with children who are secure in Phase 1 Letters and Sounds and ready for Phase 2.

This course offers clear information regarding how to use assessment information to identify children who are ready for Phase 2.
It provides practitioners the opportunity to develop their own phonological awareness and to become familiar with the content of Phase 2 of the Letters and Sounds phonics programme.
It explains the importance of a systematic and multi-sensory approach to the teaching of phonics and how to plan for a series of discrete phonics lessons.
The use of video clips will offer practitioners the opportunity to observe a phonics lesson in action.

Outcomes

By the end of this session practitioners will:

  • Be familiar with the Key Messages from the Rose Report and the principles that underpin early reading
  • Understand the skills and knowledge needed to teach phonics effectively.
  • Be able to recognise those children who are ready for Phase 2
  • Be familiar with the content of Phase 2 of the Letters and Sounds phonics teaching programme
  • Be able to plan for and deliver high quality multi-sensory phonics lessons using the recommended teaching sequence
