Understanding Babies *New 3 Part Course*

Introductory Level

Outline

To ensure that practitioners working with children under the age of two understand the specific needs of babies.

This course is linked to the EYFS requirement that at least half the staff working with children under two have received specific training that addresses the care of babies and young children.

Description

Part 1 will concentrate on Infant mental health focusing on What is IMH? Transition to Parenthood, The Baby Brain, Building new Relationships – What is Bonding and Attachment?

Part 2 will provide practitioners with a sound knowledge of child development for babies up to the age of 2, including social and emotional development, communication and language development, physical development

Part 3 will enable practitioners to understand children’s play through schemas and explore appropriate resources and activities that support learning and development of young children up to age 2 (including heuristic, sensory play) as well enable them to create a high quality environment for them to thrive in.

Outcomes

By the end of this 3 part course practitioners will be able to:

  • Be able to define and have an understanding of infant mental health, including social and emotional development and the importance of those 1001 critical days.
  • Have an understanding of transition to parenthood; bonding and attachment and baby brain development.
  • Know the importance of infant observation and understand how to create a high quality socially interactive environment in which babies thrive.
  • Consider how to support and work in partnership with parents especially during the induction and settling in period.
  • Have a sound knowledge of child development for babies up to the age of 1, including emotional development, communication and language development, physical development.
  • Understand how to create a high quality environment in which babies and children up to the age of 1 will thrive.
  • Explore appropriate resources and activities that support learning and development of babies under 1 (including treasure baskets)
  • Explore the importance of routines and personalised physical care
  • Understand the importance of baby led weaning
  • Consider how to work in partnership with parents especially during the induction and settling in period
